Meet Apua Agriculture: Organic Yerba Mate from Brazil
Apua Agriculture is a small producer in Paraná, southern Brazil, dedicated to regenerative agroforestry and the revival of traditional yerba mate production. Instead of following industrial monoculture methods, Apua plants yerba mate in a thriving ecosystem of fruit trees, timber trees, and native species.
Their name, Apua, comes from Quechua and means “mountains", a nod to the land they’re working to restore.
Why Shade-Grown Yerba Mate Matters
Unlike conventional plantations that rely on sun exposure and chemical fertilizers, Apua grows shade-grown yerba mate in diverse forests. This natural environment is the mate tree’s true habitat, producing leaves richer in flavor, aroma, caffeine, and antioxidants.
When you drink Apua, you’re tasting mate the way the forest intended.
The Barbacua Method: A Flavor From the Past
Apua is one of the last producers using the barbacua drying method, a slow fire process that takes 20–30 hours of continuous wood heat.
Industrial mate: dried in 30 minutes to 3 hours, optimized for speed.
Apua mate: dried with fire over 30 hours, resulting in a smoky, complex, slightly bitter flavor that older generations recognize instantly.
It’s a labor of love, not optimization and it makes each sip unique.
Single-Origin, Small-Batch Yerba Mate
Every batch of Apua mate is harvested from a single location. No blending.
The result is a single-origin yerba mate that reflects the soil, shade, and microclimate of that exact forest. Each harvest is different, making Apua a rare artisanal experience in a market dominated by industrial brands.
